Räsybondage (2024)
Experimental costume study, guided by Susan Marshall. The piece is modular; meaning it can be built, rebuilt and worn in multiple different ways.
Demonstrated on a mannequin and my own body.
Materials used:
Second hand sourced rag rug fibers (räsy). Crocheted into pancakes and a harness base.
Assortment of mismatched buttons, found at the atelier. Used to attach pieces to eachother.
Rope snippets, found at the atelier. Used to attach pieces to eachother.
The crocheted surface provides as many anchor points for attatchment, scrunching etc. as the piece is built out of. With even more crocheted pancakes, the build options are nigh limitless. The costume is fairly heavy, which affects the posture and movement of the wearer.
The lush texture brings forth images of corals, and the bondage-like build conjoined with material reminiscent of grandmas rag rugs and button collections are an interesting combination.
I would love to build upon this demo, and create an even larger piece with more modular pieces.
It would be interesting to study how this costume could live in a performance setting, adapting from one form onto another.
